For the record, I’ve no idea of the measurement of Dude’s calves. I know the stitch count, for me, for regular commercial sock yarn, on size 0 needles.

Wow. Those are huge issues to grapple with. I don’t remember hearing the clock tick until my 30’s. (And about half the women on the planet are jealous of menopause at 35.)

Don’t rush. You’ll know when its right. Trust yourself.

Glad to hear the surgery went well. Continued best wishes for all.

About that restraint (wrt casting on): I practice full-on project management. Every weekend, I look at knitting in progress, evaluate how much is to be completed (and where). If necessary, I prep the next thing.

Its such a disaster to have to work late, finish something on the train, get home and have to chose between figuring out the next project or sleep. (Darn that sleep always getting in the way!)
